Passivation

Passivation is a chemical surface treatment process used primarily for stainless steel to remove free iron and other surface contaminants. It enhances the metal’s natural protective oxide layer, improving its resistance to corrosion without changing its dimensions or appearance.

Passivation restores and strengthens the natural chromium oxide layer on stainless steel, helping protect it from rust, staining, and corrosion. It is especially important for components used in harsh, humid, or chemically demanding environments where long-term corrosion resistance is essential.

The benefits of passivation can last for many years, depending on the operating environment, maintenance, and exposure to corrosive substances. Under normal conditions, a properly passivated stainless steel component maintains its corrosion resistance throughout its service life unless the surface is damaged or contaminated.

Passivation improves corrosion resistance, removes surface contaminants, enhances product reliability, extends component lifespan, and helps maintain the cleanliness and performance of stainless steel parts. It is also commonly specified to meet industry quality and performance standards.

Passivation is widely used in the aerospace, medical, pharmaceutical, food processing, chemical processing, marine, oil and gas, and manufacturing industries. It is recommended for stainless steel components that require high levels of corrosion resistance, hygiene, and long-term durability.

Passivation removes surface contaminants and strengthens the natural protective oxide layer without significantly changing the surface finish. Electropolishing also improves corrosion resistance but additionally smooths and brightens the metal surface by removing a thin layer of material.

Passivation is recommended after machining, welding, fabrication, or surface finishing to restore corrosion resistance and remove contaminants before the component is placed into service.
